An Attitude of Gratitude

The last three months of the year shift our focus to an attitude of gratitude. Maybe because it has been a great year for many reasons, and you feel grateful for everything that came your way. Or maybe it has been a negative year. You feel grateful you have survived and positive next year will be better. You also recognize holding a positive attitude about the year soon to pass. Your trials have made you stronger.

An Attitude of Gratitude

You realize that with an attitude of gratitude you are closer to realizing your hopes and dreams, and enjoying your life’s journey along the way. An attitude of gratitude means making it a habit to express thankfulness and appreciation in all parts of your life, on a regular basis, for both the big and small things alike.

This attitude often gets expressed around the table at Thanksgiving. If you concentrate on what you have, you’ll always have more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough.” As we head towards Thanksgiving, it is especially important to be grateful of those who have helped you get wherever you are.  Gratitude can help you enjoy the experience, in its fullness, of attaining that which you desire. By being grateful for what you have (big or small), you reflect on the happiness, joy, love, peace and other positive things that are in your life and you attract more of the same.

Here are some suggestions for bringing an attitude of gratitude into your daily life:

  • Wake up every day and express to yourself what you are grateful for
  • Tell whoever you are with at the end of the day the three things you are most grateful for
  • Tell whoever you are with right now (significant other, friend, family member, etc.) the three things that you are most grateful for in this moment
  • Start a gratitude journal – Express gratitude in this journal every night by noting the things that you are grateful for, proud of, and excited about
  • Acknowledge yourself for what you have done and accomplished in the last day/week/month/year. Instead of comparing yourself to others, give yourself credit for the big and small things you have been doing!
  • Acknowledge other people and thank them for inspiring/helping/supporting you – often people wait their whole lives to be acknowledged (and yet it happens far too infrequently)!

Those suggestions put you in a frame of mind that is extremely powerful to helping you manifest what you want in your life.  A positive frame of mind allows you to be much more present for the happy things that are happening in your own life.  It also does wonders to help prevent challenges, and unimportant distractions steal your experience of these positive things away from you.

What we focus on expands. If you worry about something, that which you focus on by default takes a larger role in your daily experience. Try this simple experience. Try not to focus on the large, pink elephant in the room carrying a purple umbrella in his trunk. It is tough, isn’t it? Why not spend that energy of worry on a positive action or attitude? If you spend your time focusing on what is RIGHT in your life, then by default that will take a larger role in your life.  Imagine how you would feel if more of the things that you are grateful for were more present and bigger in your life. A mentor to me taught me this phrase: “Be, Do, Have.” Simply, if you BE positive and DO the positive suggestions, you will HAVE a positive attitude, and it follows a positive life.

Do you want to monitor your positive attitude? Keep a journal.

Write down in your journal everything you are grateful for as it happens throughout your day so that you pause and become present for that special moment.

Take a few minutes at the start of your day and list what makes you grateful.  You will be surprised at how this sets the tone for the rest of the day in a positive way for you.

You will find that you attract people into your life that are positive, that have an attitude of gratitude.
